A play written by Tennessee Williams is set in 1930s New Orleans. A wealthy widow named Mrs. Violet Venable seeks to suppress the truth about Sebastian’s death and demise, involving his dark desires and manipulation of vulnerable young men from the previous summer. Mrs. Venable plans to lobotomize her niece Catherine, whose sanity hangs in the balance as she tries to reveal Sebas tian’s truths. The play delves into themes of truth versus deception, the destructive power of secrets, and the clash between societal norms and individual desires. As tensions escalate, revelations unfold, ultimately exposing the grim reality lurking beneath the facade of Southern gentility.
LYCEUM THEATER - TEMPE, ARIZONA | Designed Fall 2023
The intent of the design was to resemble a patio on the exterior of a house in the Garden District of New Orleans in 1930, but with a twist. The house, furniture, and props were designed to be white and outlined in black to support the dark theme of the play in a beautiful southern setting, while drawing attention to the delusions of the characters. This design concept extends to the jungle plants of Sebastian’s patio, as they are overgrown and not well kept. This is why they are the only elements displayed in full color.
Magenta Hibiscus Flowers
Vibrant and Bold Jungle Plants
White Wicker Furniture

Trellis
The trellis is off on stage right to signify the edge of the house porch. The posts are to be painted white wood and appear soft. In contrast, the accent pieces of the fence are to be black/gray wrought iron and appear rough.
